Exposing Your Exes' Secret

One of the scariest things in life is falling in love, opening your heart and showing true vulnerability. Most people don’t enter into a relationship with the expectation of breaking up, falling out of love and possibly being betrayed. Truthfully, you never know how things are going to turn out. In a perfect world we would all find the love of life in high school, get married and live happily ever after (thankfully that’s my story). In most relationships your ex starts off as seemingly the perfect match. That’s why you gave them the time of day in the first place. But when things go south, betrayal and humiliation are the easiest ways to retaliate. The most sadistic way to humiliate your ex or anyone close to you for that matter is through the internet. Things posted in cyberspace live forever no matter how quickly you thumb for the delete button. When ending a relationship on bad terms it’s inevitable to walk away emotionally unscathed. The term misery loves company is an age old mantra that rings true when talking about bad breakups. Far less true for the phrase, sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. Words do hurt. In fact they can be downright lethal. Pictures are even worse. When posted online they’re evidence that lives on through infinity. We’ve all been there-given our heart to someone, trusted them with our most valued possessions-our secrets, just to later be betrayed.

With Facebook, Instagram and Twitter celebrities are no different form the average Joe when it comes to sharing too much information and using social networks as weapons of mass reputation destruction. Take Floyd Mayweather for instance. He is a fierce competitor in the ring, a five-division world champion who has won seven world titles and remains undefeated. Recently, he exposed intimate details concerning the breakup from his ex-fiancé, Shantel Jackson. He posted to his Instagram, but later deleted, “the real reason me and Shantel Christine Jackson @missjackson broke up was because she got an abortion, and I’m totally against killing babies. She killed our twin babies”. He also posted and later deleted pictures of medical records indicating that the two fetuses were aborted, and pictures of Jackson pre and post plastic surgery that he claims he paid for. Whether all this is true or not, we don't know the circumstances that led her to that decision.

At what point does being bitter and jaded turn into pure unadulterated hatefulness? I asked the question to my Facebook friends, Is it ever okay to expose your exes' secrets? Here are a few responses.
"It's inappropriate, immature, petty, and shows how bitter said party is to reveal sensitive info that someone trusted you with regardless of how things turned out. How do I know? I was this person once in my early 20s. The aspect of moving on comes with maturity." Dee Brink

"That's so not ok. The bonding intimacy shared between two people in a relationship is so sacred. It should be valued & if you were not the person blessed enough to travel that journey with another you should take no mind to remember what it took for them to get where they are. That's petty and reflects poorly on your character, never bad on them, regardless of the secret. No decent woman would consider dating him now knows that info. He's kicked himself in the mouth." Shayla Courtney

My rule of thumb concerning anything on social media is, if your grandmother wouldn’t approve don’t post it! And like my mother once told me, “some secrets are best kept when kept to yourself”.
