Race: The Priority of Dating

Taraji P. Henson was misquoted as to allegedly having said that she gave up on dating Black men when she recently appeared on the Wendy Williams Show. Having saw the episode myself when it aired, I can unequivocally say that was not true. I love Taraji because she's a great actress, stylish and outspoken. What does it say about us when we are so eager to attack a person based on dating preference? She later went on the defensive to clarify what she meant stating, "The media said I was done with Black men. I have a Black son, what are you saying, what does that mean?” She continued, “I said that I have started dating other cultures, so it was a celebration of other cultures and not a put down of my own. That’s stupid. Why would I say I’m done with Black men. That’s dumb.”

Taraji, who is the star of a new film inspired by a true store entitled, From the Rough told Williams that, "I’m dating. I can’t say that I’m done totally with American men but I am very excited about my finds over in Europe. I think there is a cultural difference with men from other countries. They are not as bitter and jaded and closed up as a lot of the men here. I’m not saying all men, I can’t say that I’m done with American man, I’ll never say that." Her advice as is mine to all women, Black women in particular, "Broaden your spectrum". Open up the possibilities of finding love from all cultures. What does it really matter the race or ethnicity if you are genuinely compatible? More importantly, if God made man in His image, shouldn't we be open to finding the special someone He meant for us? Or is race so important that we are willing to forgo the chance of finding a lifetime of happiness?

In preparation for this post, I posed a question to my single (not all who responded are single), female Facebook friends, "Have you considered dating someone outside your race?" Here is what a few of them had to say.

"I would I see nothing wrong with dating outside of my race. Just as long as you and person understand each other cultural differences that might arise." Manika Parker

"(Though I'm not "single" technically) before I got into my current relationship I can honestly say I had somewhat given up on black men. I had reached a point in my dating experience that I was completely open to dating outside my race and was really only interested in that. I think Taraji made some very valid points in her recent comments on dating men who aren't American. Women should be more open to give everyone a chance. Men sure as hell are and 9/10 times they end up happy to. Date who you want to not who you're told to." Shayla Courtney

Celebrity Interracial couple, David Bowie and Iman
"I've always been open to dating outside my race and have done so...can't put a color on love and I'd never want to miss my Mister Right limiting myself. I think black women are too loyal to men that aren't (in large part) loyal to us and as long as we limit ourselves we will remain the highest unmarried demo." Riquel Binion

"For me when it came to dating  to find a mate.. it always came down to people's heart and their beliefs...which are all internal... I was boy crazy back in the day and I can proudly say I was an equal opportunity dater." Samantha Kyle Thompson
"I would be considered color blind to dating. I believe God had the same mindset when we were created. That being everyone seen as equal. Color is nothing but a quality of something whether that be an object or a person. The outer appearance doesn't make the person. I think many people miss out on true love sometimes because of what they see on the outside. I would date someone outside of my race." Maria Edmonds

Remember this Cheerios commercial? Click here. At one point YouTube had to disable the comments section because the posts were so cruel and derogatory. One simply stated, "Gross". Another comment was a little more sinister, "Isn't this how we got the disaster known as Obama".  What does it say about our society when we put so much emphasis on race? When a couple unites and creates a happy, healthy, Christian family, what more can you ask for?
